We cultivate organic pawpaw varieties, focusing on quality and sustainability in northern Rhode Island.

Cultivar Development

People have been enjoying pawpaws in North America for thousands of years. Animals and humans spreading pawpaw seeds as they travel for future generations to enjoy. Wild pawpaws can be delicious but just like many other wild fruits not every tree will produce the same quality of fruit. Meaning some wild fruits can have less than pleasing flavors. Over the last 100 years more and more people have been cultivating pawpaws to have superior traits like larger sweeter fruit with fewer seeds and a creamy custard texture. Naked Pawpaw has been collecting these superior pawpaw cultivars in our test orchard to study and enjoy.

Fruit Production

While we are still a young and small pawpaw orchard, our trees produce an abundance of fruit. Each year more of our trees come into production with an abundance of fruit that needs to be enjoyed by more and more people.

North American Pawpaws have a very tropical flavor, this is due to their tropical origins.

From Kentucky State University:"The unique flavor of the fruit resembles a blend of various tropical flavors, including banana, pineapple, and mango. The flavor and custard-like texture make Pawpaws a good substitute for bananas in almost any recipe."

While some people will cook and bake with pawpaws we find them best enjoyed fresh.
